For more than 30 years, Oxbow Animal Health has been committed to doing our part to create a more advanced and enriched animal health landscape – one where everyone, from veterinary professionals to pet parents, has the knowledge, tools, and overall support to provide a better quality of life for our beloved pets. A part of this commitment has involved the evaluation of opportunities to engage in professional research.
We evaluate all research opportunities on a case-by-case basis, actively seeking the input of exotic veterinarians, academicians, and animal advocates before making a decision to participate in or support a particular initiative. Our participation in any research has always been contingent upon the potential for a significant outcome that could provide better treatment and care for small animals globally.
Research methods for all Oxbow-supported initiatives are carefully designed to achieve research outcomes in the least invasive manner possible. In most cases, the animals involved in Oxbow-supported research initiatives have been adopted out following the conclusion of the studies. In very rare cases, specific research outcomes have required humane euthanasia to facilitate the collection of important data. Oxbow’s decision to participate in projects requiring humane euthanasia, while extremely difficult, has always been made with the utmost thought, care, and respect for the animals involved.
Up until now, Oxbow has not taken a formal stance on participation in studies that involve the euthanasia of animals. However, effective immediately, Oxbow has decided to cease participation in any study that involves the euthanasia of animals. We remain committed to engaging in research projects that advance the landscape of animal health and wellness, and we will continue to fulfill what we see as our obligation to proactively look for the most humane opportunities to contribute to this advancement.

Advancing knowledge is key to long-term advancements in small animal health. As leaders in the field, we are committed to exploring new opportunities to improve care for small animals the world over. We evaluate these opportunities carefully, calling on the expertise and guidance of the veterinary and animal advocacy communities. We recognize that all animals' lives are important, and we are hereby committed to not participating in research that involves the willful harm or euthanasia of animals.
Feeding trials are an important component of the product development process, and Oxbow is committed to conducting these trials in a safe and non-invasive manner. These trials are designed to provide insight into important areas such as ingredient preference, palatability, and physical performance. These trials are conducted on a volunteer basis (most often in partnership with rescues) and involve pet parents and caretakers willing to gauge and report on their animals’ preferences and general health data. We are committed to ensuring no animals are harmed during the testing or trials of any Oxbow product.
Throughout our 30+ year history, Oxbow has been dedicated to providing nutrition that meets the unique and specific needs of small animals. Through research and product testing, our understanding of the nutritional needs of small animals continues to evolve to this day. Our continued pursuit of knowledge provides us with valuable information in our quest to provide sustenance that models Mother Nature, and care that creates the greatest quality of life possible for all pets.
The work of small animal advocates is essential to advancing education and pet care. We have long-standing relationships with the rescue community and advocacy organizations, and we support these groups in an ongoing manner through grants, sponsorships, product discounts and emergency assistance, as well as any other opportunities that arise.
