HURRICANE HAZEL

HURRICANE HAZEL

On Oct. 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall in Little River as a Category 4 Hurricane, making it the strongest hurricane to ever hit Horry County.

Over the years, the WMBF First Alert team has talked to several survivors about the time leading up to the powerful hurricane and the aftermath.

HURRICANE HUGO

HURRICANE HUGO

Hugo was a Category 4 monster that roared ashore on Sept. 22, 1989. It wasn't a direct hit for the Grand Strand, but the impacts were devastating.

Legendary photographer Jack Thompson survived Hugo and documented the incredible aftermath.

HURRICANES MATTHEW AND FLORENCE

HURRICANES MATTHEW AND FLORENCE

Hurricanes don't have to be a Category 4 to be devastating. Hurricane Matthew hit the South Carolina coast as a Category 1 Hurricane on Oct. 8, 2016, and Hurricane Florence made landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane on Sept. 14, 2018. Sandy Johnson survived both storms but both storms brought destructive flooding to her home.
