Dale Spilman - Senior, Mandan High School - Mandan, ND
Hello! My name is Dale Spilman. I am a senior at Mandan High School. I will complete high school with 36 college credits and having participated in as many high school activities as time permitted. While in high school, I was able to spend a summer attending ND Governor’s School (NDGS) participating in the engineering program. While there, I found a college and a vocation. After high school, I plan to attend North Dakota State University to obtain a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and receive a minor in business. Once I complete college, I would like to obtain some work experience and one day own a business. Being a lifelong learner is my primary educational goal.
Extracurricular activities and achievements where part of my high school activities. I have been a member of the National Honor Society member the past 3 years and on the MHS Honor Roll. I have also had an opportunity to learn, teach leadership classes and make many friends as a ND State DECA Vice President. As a 4-year three sport athlete, I will have obtained 12 varsity letters. I have been team captain for these sports, two time state wrestling champion, and all-state football selection. Other activities I have been active in are: Student Council, Science Club, robotics competitions, FBLA, Choir, and Latin Club. Academically, I have been a two time finalist at the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Service to others has become a guiding principle in my life. While at NDGS, I was the only recipient of the Exemplary Service Award. I have been a youth coach for football and wrestling for 3 years. I have also participated in the Great American Bike Race to support youth with cerebral palsy. High school service organizations have provided activities for service to others by doing fundraisers, serving meals, and participating in community clean-up projects. As a member of my church community, I have been a communion server, greeter, youth Sunday school teacher, coffee server, janitor, and lead trumpet for the church brass band.
My focus in life has been to always set the highest example for others to follow. This scholarship will help finance my opportunity to advance my knowledge and skills to lead others and become a problem solve as an engineer to improve our world.
